Local choir, Pakefield Singers, received a standing ovation at the end of a performance of Mendelssohn’s great oratorio Elijah.

The choir, augmented by other local singers, were accompanied by an orchestra, led by Pakefield resident Jim O’Toole, for the performance in Great Yarmouth Minster on Saturday.

The title role of Elijah was sung by baritone, Gareth Brynmor John, whose rich voice filled the vast space of the Minster, and he was joined by soloists Jo Westaway’s soprano, Diana Moore mezzo soprano and tenor Nick Allen.

The concert, which was conducted by Vetta Wise, was enthusiastically received by an appreciative audience who went away with Mendelssohn’s glorious music still ringing in their ears.

Pakefield Singers can next be heard in Pakefield Church at 7.30pm on Saturday, November 25th when they will present ‘Joy to the World’, a concert of seasonal favourites.
