TO mark the 21st anniversary of Lowestoft's Marina Theatre re-opening, one of Britain's best-loved entertainers, Des O'Connor, returns on October 16 with his unique brand of comedy, laughter and music.

Lowestoft holds special memories for Des, having been booked in the town in his first ever summer season back in 1954. Initially contracted for a 16-week run at the former Arcadia Theatre in London Road South, the season ran for more than 23 weeks, becoming one of the most successful shows ever staged in the town.

One of only a handful of British entertainers to be acclaimed internationally on stage and television, his American series was shown in more than 40 countries and seen by more than 100 million people worldwide.

On stage he has appeared at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, The Sydney Opera House, The O'Keefe Centre, Toronto, and more than 1,000 times at the London Palladium.

Since 1967 he has been a hugely successful recording star, producing 36 albums with sales of more than 16 million, and has spent more than117 weeks in the top 10 charts.

In 2001 he received a special recognition award at the National TV awards, and his top-selling autobiography Bananas Can't Fly was published in 2002. His current album, Inspired, comprises 18 new songs co-written with Alan Hawkshaw.

His daytime television talk show Today With Des And Mel, which he co-hosted with Melanie Sykes, won a Royal Television Society award, and in 2007 he took over the helm of the Channel 4 quiz Countdown for two years.

On the other side of the camera, Des, who was awarded the CBE in 2008, is kept busy with his own television production company.

Tickets for the show are available from the Marina Box Office on Lowestoft 01502 533200.
