WITH just over one week to go before the curtain is raised on the latest pantomime from the Lowestoft Players, it's all systems go for the local theatre group.

Aladdin and the Wonderful Lamp will be the society's 42nd seasonal pantomime and while the cast are being put through their final rehearsals, there is an additional army of loyal volunteers working behind the scenes making and organising the scenery, props, lighting and costumes.

This year Stephen Wilson is playing the role of Widow Twankey and in true Players tradition audiences can expect an outrageous wardrobe of specially created frocks for the pantomime dame.

Stephen said: “The script calls for 13 different entrances and for every one the dame will have a different themed costume. It's both fun and a challenge to think of ideas for each of the costumes. Without giving too much away, laundry, washing, sweets, shopping and space travel have inspired some of the fabulous creations.”

This year's pantomime features a cast of over 30 singers and dancers, 12 children, music from Mike West and his band, an animated film sequence magic carpet ride and a unique Black Theatre experience.

Aladdin and his Wonderful Lamp will be playing at the Marina Theatre, in Lowestoft, for a total of nine performances, including four matinees from Saturday, January 23 to Sunday, January 31. Tickets are available by calling the theatre box office on 01502 533200.

Before this, the Players have a big weekend in store as they open their new headquarters and rehearsal studios at the Bethel.

There will be an open day in the Battery Green Road building tomorrow from 10am to 4pm for anyone interested in seeing their new rehearsal space or becoming a member.
