A LOWESTOFT mother has started baby signing classes after discovering there were none available in this area.

Rachel Youngman, who has a 16-month-old son Ben, runs the group on Mondays and Tuesdays at Kessingland Church Hall and Oulton Community Centre.

The classes aim to teach babies and mothers signs through songs and rhymes written especially for them.

Using British sign language, they help babies to communicate using different commands such as if they are tired or hungry, without the need for crying.

Babies start to pick up signs from around seven months old, but classes are open from birth for the babies to enjoy the music and songs and have lots of fun.

A mascot called Cuddles is used and all the songs and stories are based around her.

Parents, grandparents and babies are welcome to drop in as no booking is required.

Classes are held at Kessingland every Monday from 1-2pm for under-ones and 2-3pm for older children and on Tuesday at Oulton Community Centre from 10-11am for under ones and 11-12pm for over ones.

Classes are £4 per session and refreshments are provided. There is no class on bank holiday Monday.
