LOWESTOFT Marina Theatre's big screen presents The Golden Compass (PG) this week as part of its ongoing winter film season.

Based on the first part of author Philip Pullman's successful trilogy His Dark Materials, the film is set in an alternative world where people's souls manifest themselves as animals.

Performances of the film, which stars Nicole Kidman, Daniel Craig, Dakota Blue Richards and Eva Green, run nightly until Thursday at 7.30pm, with matinees at 2.30pm tomorrow, Sunday and Wednesday.

Other top family films due to grace the theatre's big screen in the coming weeks are Stardust (PG), Mr Magorium's Wonder Emporium (U) and Enchanted (PG), while critically acclaimed flicks The Jane Austen Book Club (12A), Lions For Lambs (15), The Kite Runner (12A) and The Magic Flute (PG) are also set to screen.

Over 700 seats are available allowing the opportunity to book in advance or turn up on the door, with tickets £3.50 and £2.50 for concessions, friends of the Marina and children.

Live entertainment is due to return to the Marina on February 1 as leading local dance school First Steps presents a charity showcase. This will be followed by the start of the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra's 2008 season on February 8 and the 40th Anniversary tour of the Syd Lawrence Orchestra on February 9.

February will also see the return of popular comic actor Damian Williams in the Ray Cooney comedy Tom, Dick and Harry, while West End star Gary Wilmot features in a musical production of Half A Sixpence.
