Investigations into a blaze which gutted seven town centre flats leaving people homeless and a community shaken have been closed.

13 fire engines attended the fire which started on June 3 in the flats above Vin-Tro and High Street Furnishings shops at 144 High Street in Lowestoft.

The fire broke out at around 4pm and was put out at around 6.30pm with firefighters at the scene into the night.

Two people were rescued from the roof of the building as the fire gutted the building.

Two and a half weeks later, Suffolk Fire and Rescue and the police closed their joint investigation. The police said the cause of the fire is "undetermined".

The investigation was delayed over structural safety concerns of the building.

A Suffolk fire spokesman said: "I can confirm that the joint investigation between police, fire and Prometheus Fire investigation has now been concluded.

"The cause has been recorded as undetermined at this time.

"The police have now closed the incident and the building has been handed back to the building owner."

People on the street speculated that the cause of the fire may have been arson as the day the fire saw armed police enter the flats.

But a police spokesman said officers had been called to the block of flats to handle what was described as a "medical episode".

The police said there was "no clear evidence of arson" behind the blaze.

A spokesman said: “Police conducted an investigation into a fire on the High Street on 3 June but no clear evidence of arson was forthcoming so the case has been filed pending any further new leads emerging.”
